SHOREDITCH DESIGN TRIANGLE
16 - 24 September 2023

For the past 15 years, the Shoreditch Design Triangle has been celebrating the creative scene that flourishes in the area by showcasing the works of local artists. At AIDA we have always been a part of this very special event and this year we are extremely proud to be displaying the beautiful tapestries of our very own AIDA team member Llinos Owen.

The Shoreditch Design Triangle was established in 2008 as a way to celebrate the creative industry in East London. Being one of London’s largest and most varied districts, it is a celebration of all that the East End represents and is hosted by the creative companies that work here. The event is a blend of product launches, exhibitions, installations, talks, tours and culinary delights, giving visitors the opportunity to experience little pieces of what this bustling area has to offer.

With its location just north of the City of London, Shoreditch has a history rooted in both entertainment and industry. It has continued to be a hub of activity and carries its own eclectic atmosphere which is set amongst a mix of post-industrial spaces and the new developments of leading architects. It is an area where residents, creative industries, the arts, retailers, restauranteurs, party-goers and international visitors all join in to celebrate differences, embrace new ideas and welcome the individual. Known as much for its singularity as its togetherness, there is a community feel in Shoreditch and never a shortage of events and activities in and around the area.

This year the SDT is showing over 100 different individual events, with work on show from designers and artists from all over the world. Expect to see a heady mix of design-led furniture, accessories, lighting, ceramics, fashion, jewellery, bags, tableware, cookware, books, prints, flowers, textiles, bicycles, stationary and even chocolate. There are also leading architecture projects, mixed media events and video installations.

The events scheduled have been selected to be sources of inspiration for visitors to both see and experience. The best way to get around Shoreditch to the different events is to hop on a bicycle or explore on foot, but don’t expect to be able to see everything in one day because there is so much on offer. And as always, as night falls, expect the customary freedom, mystery and promise that the East End has always provided for London.

At AIDA we are showcasing the works of Llinos Owen who is a Welsh Fine Art textile artist (and also our very own barista who you can find working in our café!). She has exhibited her textured tapestries at the Saatchi Gallery, The Other Art Fair and Orleans House Gallery and has created a special collection to show in AIDA as part of the SDT. She creates painting inspired imagery with textile materials which explore themes around her own personal narrative and subject matters, beginning every autobiographical textile practice with personal written and visual material from her diary.

Her works are based on memories, relationships, and personal life experiences, exploring themes relating to her own identity. She views them as forms of visual storytelling and self portraiture through the medium of punch needle rug hooking. Identity and gender are important themes as the materials and techniques she explores acknowledges the history of feminine identities by focusing on a historically women-dominated craft. Her work is blurring the lines between the domestic, the mundane and the gallery space.

Come check Llinos Owen and all the other artists out, SDT runs from the 16 – 24 September.
