Style Influence: Eugene Tong | Menswear
To us, Eugene Tong was a face before he was a name. A recurring face caught by the cameras of Tommy Ton and Scott Schuman, pinned and noted many times over in the search for fresh menswear inspiration. The subsequent style stalking led us to his identity, and his accolades, and a much deserving ‘aha’. Turns out we’re a little late in the game – Tong already has a fervent fashion fan base as well as critical acclaim: 56k and counting Instagram followers and the top spot on Complex’s Most Stylish Men in Media.

Originally from Taiwan, Tong worked his way up through the fashion ranks, from intern to editor, via FHM, Cargo and his current haunt – major American menswear magazine Details. He now holds place as Senior Style Editor, and plays a side game with NYC brand Public School, winners of the 2013 CFDA Swarovski Award for Menswear.

Tong’s expert mix of understated high-end pieces and streetwear essentials is displayed in perfect basics, subtle tailoring and muted colours. He achieves the regularly attempted and rarely mastered combination ‘high-low’ dressing in real time. Designers such as Hermes, Alexandre Mattiussi, and Philip Lim mixed with Y3 jackets, Supreme five panels, Chuck Taylors or the ubiquitous Nikes. The overall look is knowledgably, effortlessly relaxed – as Complex crowned it: ‘Casual Mastery’. And it doesn’t hurt that he so often looks like he’s having a bloody good time.
